At the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT), we take pride in driving Maryland forward by delivering safe, reliable, sustainable and equitable multimodal transportation. An essential part of our mission is helping local governments unlock game changing federal funding through federal discretionary grant programs. Since the passage of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (IIJA), our collaborative efforts have resulted in nearly $1 billion in awarded grants — positioning communities across Maryland for long term vitality.
Your Partner in Federal Success
MDOT’s dedicated grants team works side-by-side with towns, counties and regional partners to navigate the complexity of the federal funding landscape. From technical consultations and best practices to support letters and application reviews, we are here to support your pathway to success, as we work together to enhance safety, mobility and economic opportunities for all Marylanders.

Success in Action
- Town of Berlin: Reconnecting Communities Grant ($250,000) – Fiscal Year 2023
MDOT provided Berlin with tailored technical assistance, culminating in a $1.2 million award to design a Route 113 pedestrian crossing that will safely reconnect neighborhoods and foster economic growth. While the majority of funding for this project was ultimately rescinded with the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, the Town and the State Highway Administration were able to work together to identify replacement funding to continue to advance the project as proposed.
- Safe Streets and Roads for All (Over $70 million – Fiscal Year 2022-2024) Created by the IIJA, the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program directly supports local governments in addressing roadway safety issues for vulnerable roadway users. MDOT has worked closely with communities in every corner of the state to coordinate reviews of their proposals, provide support letters, and facilitate the required State DOT coordination for implementation projects. We look forward to working with Maryland communities next spring during the last fully funded SS4A grant round.
- Washington County: BUILD Grant ($2.8 million) – Fiscal Year 2025
MDOT and the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) supported Washington County in securing highly competitive BUILD grant funding to fully design and environmentally clear a new bus facility for Washington County Transit. This transformative infrastructure improvement will help to enable future service growth, enhancing job access and mobility. MTA, through the Locally Operated Transit System (LOTS) program, will assist the County in implementing the award.
