Ahead of Labor Day, Transportation Secretary Katie Thomson wrote to our 10,000 employees about the value of the work they do. Here’s her inspiring message about serving the people of Maryland.

As we enter this Labor Day holiday weekend, I wanted to convey my appreciation for all you do.

President Theodore Roosevelt believed deeply in the value of hard work. He is often quoted as saying, “Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.”

Across MDOT, we have work worth doing.

Every day, our employees work to keep people and communities moving. Whether you operate and maintain vehicles, manage traffic and transportation systems, inspect and repair infrastructure, plan future projects, respond to emergencies, assist the public, or support our organization through finance, human resources, communications, technology, and administration, your work matters.

The people we serve depend on us. They rely on safe roads, bridges, transit services, transportation infrastructure, and the many systems that connect them to their jobs, schools, families, businesses, and communities. Much of this work happens behind the scenes.

The public may not always see the early mornings, late nights, challenging conditions, careful planning, or countless decisions that go into providing a safe, reliable transportation system. But those efforts make a difference every day.

I want to express my sincere gratitude for your commitment, professionalism, and dedication. Thank you for the work you do each day on behalf of MDOT and the communities we serve.

Wishing you and your families a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend!
