Custodial crews at the region’s busiest airport have an exhausting job on a normal day.

The BWI Marshall Airport terminal spans more than one million square feet. And the airport is typically home to more than 12,000 workers, serving tens of thousands of daily passengers. Chimes International, the airport’s custodial contractor, employs more than 250 people to satisfy the daily need of maintaining a clean airport.

But even before the global pandemic was declared, airport officials were quick to respond to health and safety concerns. Additional cleaning personnel and procedures were implemented in early March. Custodial crews were directed to step up cleaning of high-touch areas, such as handrails, elevator buttons and restroom surfaces using hospital-grade disinfectants.

A subcontractor was also brought in to provide supplementary deep cleaning services each night. Workers from Montgomery County-based Top Dog Services perform electrostatic cleaning throughout the terminal. This disinfecting procedure is an effective way of cleaning high-touch areas, while also allowing for their safe, immediate use. Many U.S. commercial airlines have also recently adopted electrostatic cleaning procedures for the inside of their aircraft.

The airport is also working with its partners to practice social distancing measures, promote frequent hand-washing and install dozens of hand sanitizing stations.
