The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) is accepting applications for the 2025–2026 Youth Transit Council, an advisory group that offers young people in the Baltimore area the opportunity to learn how MTA operates, offer suggestions to improve transit service and explore career options in the public transportation industry.

Members gain real-world skills, connect directly with MTA staff and ensure that youth perspectives are heard and respected in shaping a more connected and equitable transit system. Members are selected to represent the region’s age groups, geographies, demographics and schools.

Eligibility and Application Process

  • Open to youth ages 14 to 18 who reside in area served by the MTA Local Bus, Light Rail, Metro Subway, Commuter Bus and MARC.
  • Members must commit to at least six meetings during the academic year
  • Meetings will be held on Saturday mornings and are in-person at community locations such as schools, libraries or MTA facilities.
  • Applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on September 15, 2025.

As the Youth Council enters its third year, its objective remains to provide young people with a forum to raise awareness and understanding of topics most important to their public transportation experience. By connecting volunteer members of the council with Maryland Transit Administration staff, the Youth Transit Council is designed to foster understanding and collaboration between the agency and its young customers.

Members have a unique opportunity to explore a career in transportation and gain leadership experience while collaborating with peers from across the region. Additional incentives include monthly participation recognition and eligibility for a personalized letter of recommendation for those who attend at least six meetings.

Applications are open now through September 15, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. Prospective members are invited to apply via the online application. Community members may also nominate a youth leader for YTC using the same application page. All applicants will be notified of their status by September 19, 2025, and accepted members must confirm participation in the 2025–2026 cohort by September 23, 2025.
